If you’re like me, sometimes you just get up on a Saturday and realize that you need to do something. Seriously, if you’re like me, your wife will TELL you on a Saturday morning that you need to do something. Thanks honey. This can be something small – maybe replace a lightbulb, adjust the way a drawer closes, rearrange her room a little bit – or it could be something considerably larger. Maybe you need to replace a door, modify your flooring, replace some plumbing, or any number of other things.
This blog is dedicated to those type of projects. Maybe you want to tackle doing some outside work like putting swing on your front porch, or even pouring some concrete, building a pagoda or a deck. Whatever your interest, you may see us discuss it here. We’ll just be covering things as we either do them or feel like revisiting them.
One thing that can be said is to understand your abilities. A project that is over your head can be far more problems than it’s worth. Our approach has always been to choose projects that we understand and have the skill sets to handle. A little stretch is one thing. That may help you expand your horizons and abilities and learned just a little bit with each new project. when it goes beyond just a small stretch, you need to either allocate extra time in your own mind to accomplish it, or it may just turn into a project you never finish. If it turns into the latter, it’s going to be just one more thing that stirs you back in the face every day. And nobody wants that.
If you run into a project that really is beyond you or users we just don’t want to tackle, don’t be afraid to just go up to someplace online like Yelp, and spent some time finding a good contractor. There are a number of good home improvement contractors around, and places like Yelp are valuable resources for finding the best ones. as of this article, both Google and Amazon are starting to dip their toes into the home improvements pools with online offerings.
Painting around the home
Fresh coats of new color can quickly and cheaply make a house look brand new. A fresh coat of paint can make you feel like you’re living in a whole new house. Keep in mind though that repainting the exterior of your home can be a fairly time-consuming project, and one you may consider leaving to professionals. Generally house painters are not ridiculously priced, and can come in and do the whole house in just a day or two. I personally would much rather do that than have it end up taking days or even weeks to finish on your own.
When you do an exterior, you really do generally need to repaint the whole house in one shot. You really can’t do part of the house one weekend, get back to it a month or three later, do another piece, etc. Exteriors just don’t work that way. That is what makes it challenging. You may end up doing things like shutters and doors, and those can be tackled in a weekend without too much problem. However if you have a two or three story house, you immediately get into needing scaffolding or lots of ladders. there will generally be lots of climbing and other fun activities required. Additionally, if you’re anything like me, and you’re not a big fan of heights, it can be quite a knee buckling experience. Not a job I ever personally plan on doing – I leave it to professionals.
Now, do you need to repaint the whole interior? No, not really. Fresh paint in a single bedroom, a living room, kitchen, or bath is enough by itself to really spruce up house. In fact in many cases, it’s preferable to do it that way.
It’s always important to understand what you can do in the time that you have available. Many times, people start very large projects with the best of intentions, but end up running out of juice halfway through. It’s very common to hear a spouse talking about, “We’ve been working on it for the last year, but it just never seems to get done.” unless you’ve got a lot of time available, why don’t you just focus on doing one room, one furniture piece, or just a project that can be tackled in a day or even a weekend? it’s great to have goals and great aspirations, but there’s no reason to frustrate yourself with projects that are just too large. As the old joke/question goes – how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
Love it or hate it, your bathroom will always play a large part in your life. While you may or may not visit your living room, your den, or some of the other rooms round the house on a daily basis, you will pretty much always be visiting the bathroom several times per day. If the look of it annoys you, it’s going to annoy you several times per day. If the sink is leaking, you’re going to hear that drip several times a day, or until you fix it. If the porcelain in your shower or bathtub is old and dingy and you really need bathtub refinishing, it’s going to be staring you in the face every time you go in. We find that the bathroom, more than any other room, is the one that will absolutely get on your nerves when something is going wrong. for that reason, bathroom refinishing can be one of the most satisfying modifications, or improvements, that you can possibly make to your home.
You can significantly improve the look of your bathroom tile by giving it a new glaze. A fresh coat of glaze can make old tiles, an old and worn bathtub, sink, or toilet look new. While new floors can be expensive, bathrooms could be glazed for a much cheaper price. older bathtubs that are unique in design are ideal candidates for re-glazing. Especially in older homes where they have set for decades, it is very difficult to find replacement bathtubs that have the same elegance is many of the older bathtubs. Depending on the look you want for your bathroom, so many times, refinishing your tub will give it a new lease on life and retain the richness of the aged tub. This is a wonderful way to boost the beauty as well as value of your house without spending a lot.
